La Calavera Catrina was originally created by Mexican illustrator José Guadalupe Posada around 1910 as a satirical lithograph, initially called “La Calavera Garbancera”. She represents the idea that death equalizes everyone, regardless of social status, and was a critique of the Mexican high society’s embrace of European customs during the Porfirio Díaz era. The name “Catrina” comes from the slang term “catrin,” referring to a well-dressed man or woman, highlighting the satirical nature of the figure. Her widespread recognition and the name “La Catrina” largely stem from Diego Rivera’s 1947 mural “Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central” (Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park), where she is prominently featured. La Catrina has evolved to symbolize not only the Day of the Dead and the Mexican attitude towards death but also serves as a reminder of mortality and equality in the face of death.
